Metabolic Syndrome and Prostatic Disease
Lee Dong-Gi

Lee Hyung-Lae
Abstract
The metabolic syndrome is a cluster of disorders, including type 2 diabetes, atherosclerotic disease manifestations, hypertension, obesity and dyslipidemia, and is prevalent in older men and causes substantial adverse effects on health. The common mechanism for all these disorders is insulin resistance and a compensatory increased insulin level. Recent studies suggest that metabolic syndrome is involved in the pathogenesis and progression of prostatic diseases. Therefore, urologists need to recognize the effect that the metabolic syndrome has on urological disorders and should deliver this knowledge to their patients.
